Household consumption drops to zero during charging of an electric vehicle

Problem

When an electric vehicle is charging at the charging station, the household consumption appears to be at 0.

Symptoms

  • The household consumption is displayed as 0 in Xenon while the charging station (EVCS) is drawing power.

  • There is no change in the GCP (Grid Connection Point) measurements when charging starts, even though the battery is empty and there is no PV production.

Cause

  • This is an installation problem. The GCP meter is probably not measuring at the GCP.

  • It is not recording the charging of the electric vehicle as it should.

  • The EVCS charge is not reflected in the GCP meter readings.

Solution

  • The GCP meter installation must be checked and corrected to ensure that it is installed at the correct metering point.

  • It must be ensured that the GCP meter measures all household consumption, including EVCS consumption.

Additional information

  • It must be ensured that the GCP meter measures the total household consumption, and not just a portion of it.

  • The correct functioning of the GCP meter is essential for the correct display of household consumption.

EV charging stops unexpectedly

Problem

EV charging stops unexpectedly despite continued charging instructions being sent.

Symptoms

  • The electric vehicle (EV) suddenly stops charging during an active charging session.

  • This occurs even though the energy management system (EMS) continues to send charging instructions (setpoints).

  • The EV has previously charged at full power, confirming its ability to follow instructions.

  • There are two main scenarios:

    • The EV abruptly stops charging.

    • The EV gradually reduces charging power until charging stops completely.

  • After the EV Battery is fully charged, it is normal behaviour that the EV stops charging.

Cause

  • In most cases, this is expected behavior when the EV's battery is fully charged.

  • The System is reacting to the state of charge of the EV.

Solution

  • In these cases, no direct action is required by the support staff, as this is expected behavior.

  • The support staff can explain to the customer that stopping charging is normal behavior when the battery is fully charged.
